We love to see the artwork of our alumni. This cute little India Ink drawing was the artwork of Marion (Van Emmerik) Novotny, class of 1932.
Marion sketched this 93 years ago in 1928. Marion sketched this in her Sayville High Geography notebook – note the background lines. This treasure comes to us courtesy of Joe Torre of West Sayville. Thank you, Joe!

Marion F. (Van Emmerik) Novotny was born on February 6, 1913. She died in Sayville, January of 1992 at the age of 78. Marion and her husband lived at 98 Cleveland Ave., Sayville. Marion was a supporter of the Sayville Cabinet for the sick and the Joseph Kovarik American Legion Auxiliary. Of note, is that Marion’s delicious baked goods were highly acclaimed; she received a baking award in the Sayville “Great Bake-off” in 1984.

Marion was the daughter of Wynand Van Emmerik, (1886–1972) and Mary Josephine (Goff) Van Emmerik, (1886–1956). Marion had two Sayville High alumni brothers;

1. George Garrett Van Emmerik, Class of 1936.
George was born on April 25, 1918. George died in Sayville on July 14, 1971, at the age of 53. George, a veteran, served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. He is buried in Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale.

2. Wynand Van Emmerik Jr., Class of 1934, was born November 13 1916, and died December 26, 1980. Wynand, a veteran, served in the US Army Tank Corps in Africa during World War II. Wynand married Mildred Jeanette Pokorny, class of 1937. Wynand and Mildred are buried in Union Cemetery, Sayville.

Shortly, I will post an enhanced and colorized photo of Marion (Van Emmerik) Novotny, class of 1932.
