A mystery that has long captivated our alumni community has finally been solved, thanks to the dedicated and outstanding efforts of our amazing historian, Erick Baumeister, III.
While we are profoundly grateful for this resolution, it comes with heavy hearts. We have learned of the passing of our classmate, Patricia Ellen (Mega) Smith, Class of 1960.
She lived a full life from July 29, 1942 ~ July 31, 2025 (Age 83).
Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all who knew her. Though she had been lost to us for many years, she was never forgotten, and she will now be remembered properly and with honor.
For several years, Patricia was a mystery. Despite our best efforts—countless database searches, letters sent to old addresses, and inquiries among classmates—the trail always grew cold. We were left with only fragments: a belief that she had married, a memory of her dedication as a nurse, and then, a silence that lasted for years. It was as if she had stepped into a new life, leaving only whispers behind.
She did. We have since learned that Patricia was, in fact, building a remarkable and full life all those years. She was alive and thriving in Iowa, deeply immersed in her nursing career and surrounded by a large, loving extended family, doing the meaningful work we always knew she was destined for.
It is therefore with a profound mix of admiration and sorrow that we must share the news: Patricia passed away just three months ago and our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with her family, friends, classmates, and all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
To honor Patricia’s life and enduring legacy, we have created a dedicated memorial page, offering a lasting space for remembrance and reflection. Furthermore, each year on her birthday, July 29th, the Sayville Alumni Association will pay special tribute to her—celebrating the joy, kindness, and warmth she brought into the lives of so many.
It is our sincere hope that this annual remembrance serves as a source of comfort to all who knew and loved Patricia. May it keep her vibrant spirit alive, allowing her memory to continue to shine brightly in our hearts for years to come.
