The passing of Neil Bernstein
Beloved music teacher, mentor, and legendary tennis coach.

The Sayville community is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Neil Bernstein, a beloved music teacher, mentor, and legendary tennis coach, who left us on May 8, 2025. His impact on generations of students, athletes, and colleagues is immeasurable, and his legacy will forever resonate in the halls of Sayville Schools.

A Life Dedicated to Music and Excellence

Mr. Bernstein’s accomplishments were nothing short of extraordinary. As the Chairperson of the K-12 Music Department, he shaped the musical foundation of countless students. Beyond leading the department, he served as a high school music theory teacher and the advisor for the Music National Honor Society, instilling a deep appreciation for the arts in all who learned from him.

But his influence didn’t stop in the classroom. As an award-winning tennis coach, he emphasized discipline, teamwork, and passion—values that transcended sports and music alike. His dedication to helping students excel in both fields was praised by student and their parents  His encouragement pushed many to achieve high levels of success.

A Lasting Tribute

To honor his profound contributions, the Sayville Alumni Association will pay tribute to Mr. Bernstein every year on his birthday. This annual celebration of his life and work will serve as a reminder of the joy, wisdom, and inspiration he brought to so many.

We hope our birthday remembrance  tradition brings comfort to his family, friends, students, and colleagues who cherished him.

Though he may be gone, his legacy lives on in every student who carries forward his lessons—both on the court and in the concert hall.

Rest in peace, Mr. Bernstein. Your music will never fade.

I am Neil’s younger sister, Ruthie. Neil was the best brother We were very close. Janet , Neil’s older sister was also so close to Neil. We loved each other so much. Our parents gave us what’s important in life caring, helping, loving, always treat others the way you want to be treated. Everyone in our family were teachers- Our Mom,Helen Bernstein, was an elem physical education teacher but also was an All American field hockey player and played basketball at Hunter College in 1942. An amazing Mom. Our Dad , Lester Bernstein taught industrial arts but also so talented in making wood items including a carousel horse, two rooms in our house and so much more he was an amazing Dad.
