We lost Jamie Atkinson (SHS 2000) on Friday. His wake is Tuesday night at Raynor & D’Andrea and his funeral is Wednesday at St. Lawrence (time TBD).
Jamie began his community service as a West Sayville Junior Fireman before becoming a junior for the Community Ambulance. Jamie was also the youngest 9-11 survivor in the nation, the youngest Chief of the Community Ambulance Company, a highly decorated MTA detective, a vital contributor to the County’s EMS response to Covid, a champion of Sayville students, awarding early college scholarships that changed the lives of our kids and so much more.
Jamie fought valiantly for life. He has done more for others than any one person could possibly know. Jamie was a giant whose heart was just as big as his impact. He will be missed.

Experienced with a demonstrated history of working in the government, civic, community, youth services, public safety & social organization industry. Skilled and held high level leadership positions in Operations Management, Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, Workplace Safety, Hospital operations, Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Strong business development professional with a unique multidisciplinary background in brining steak holders together. Currently sits as a Executive Board Member on several veteran, Health Department, youth services, government and civic organizations.
Jamie graduated the NYPD Police Academy and the Connecticut State Police Certification to become a New York State MTA Police Officer. Jamie was promoted to Detective where he investigated several high profile train accidents with the FRA/NTSB, over 100 death investigations, notable hate crimes and fraud cases. Jamie has received MTA Police Officer of the year, Nassau County Police Commissioners Detective of the Year, LIRR Presidents Award, Investigator of the Year for the International Financial Crime Investigators Association for leading several complex multi-million dollar fraud investigations, Unit Citation, over 30 Excellent Police Duty awards, Medal of Merit, Life Saving Award, eight cop of the month awards and several other accomplishments.
Jamie also was the lead investigator and made several arrests on public corruption cases, working with the Inspector General’s Office. Jamie certified by both the NYPD and Los Angeles in Homicide Investigations, internal investigations and use of force/ in custody investigations.
Jamie has completed the NYPD Interrogator School, Nassau County Police and Los Angeles Criminal Investigators School. Jamie has attended representing the Police Department in the prestigious United Nations institute for Training and Research in the Peacekeeping Operations program.
Jamie started volunteer with the Community Ambulance at 16 years old. Jamie has held every Officer position, youngest EMS Chief and Board Member of the 3rd busiest EMS agency in Suffolk County. He currently sits on the Board and was previously the Board Vice-President and President.
Jamie is know for creating the first of its kind public access defibrillator program throughout the town of Sayville, the first ever in NY EMS agency Nasal Narcan program to decrease deaths due to the opiate overdose epidemic, EMS agencies first controlled substance program.
In 2019 Jamie was also appointed as a Suffolk County Deputy Coordinator for Emergency Services where he instrumental on the Suffolk County CORVID 19 “Think Tank” that was attached to the Planning Section inside the Suffolk County Emergency Operations Center. In this capacity Jamie was solving some of the most complex problems that faced public health and providing guidance to Suffolk County policy development with regard to the COVID 19 emergency services response.
In addition, he continues to respond throughout Suffolk County and coordinate some of the most complicated complex emergency scenes and incidents.
Jamie was appointed and confirmed by the Suffolk County Legislature to the Child Fatality Review Team where he reviews the death of anyone who is 18 years or younger, the Suffolk County Citizens Corp Council and the Suffolk County Regional Emergency Medical Services Council.
Jamie also was appointed by the Suffolk County 66th Sheriff Vincent DeMarco and 67th Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. to the Sheriff Department Advisory Board where he participates in criminal justice reform efforts inside Suffolk County.
Jamie also sits on Congressman Andrew Garbarino Military School Nomination Committee to choose students for appointments to four of the five U.S. service academies.
