It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of James “Jimmy” Straub, a beloved member of the Class of 1980. Jimmy was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country with honor, and his legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of Sayville High School. The Straub family’s roots here run long and strong, leaving an indelible mark on our community through generations.
During this difficult time, our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Jimmy’s family, friends, former classmates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We recognize the profound loss felt by those closest to him and hope they find comfort in the memories and lasting impact of his life.
Glenn Bender has kindly shared the message below from Jimmy’s daughter, Lilly, which we pass along with the utmost respect for their family’s privacy. As further details regarding arrangements or tributes become available, we will share them with the community to ensure Jimmy is honored appropriately.
James Straub
Hello everyone. My name is Lilly Straub, I’m James’ daughter. I’m posting here to reach as many of his friends as I can.
On Sunday, May 18th, my dad passed away in the afternoon surrounded by his family.
He wanted to keep his illness private, so for those of you who didn’t know, that’s how he wanted it.
We’re going to leave his Facebook page available for another week so anyone who would like to post nice messages or memories and especially photos are encouraged to, so myself and my mom can see them.
He did not want any services. He only asked that if anyone wanted to do something for him or our family, he would like donations to be made in his name to Shenandoah Oncology in Winchester, Virginia.
