We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jacqueline (Shortell) McSweeney, a respected member of the Class of 1961. Jacqueline Shortell McSweeney, 81, a lifelong resident of Sayville, NY, died on Monday, December 2, 2024. A graduate of Sayville High School, Jacqueline earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Stony Brook University. She went on went on to earn her Juris Doctor at City University of New York, all while raising her four daughters. Mrs. McSweeney was an author, editor, attorney and life-long activist.
Jacqueline was predeceased by the love of her life and husband, William, in 2023, to whom she was married for sixty-three years. She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Ryder of Sayville, Alane Rhame-McSweeney and her partner Terry Bonson of Burlington, VT, Lauren McSweeney-Aspiotis and her former husband Georgios of Queens and Leigh Bergen and her husband, Bruce, of Mattituck; her grandchildren, Daniel, Jacqueline, Elly, Ryan, Kaylee, Spiros and Vasilios, as well as her beloved sister and brother, Barbara Shortell-Wallace and Alan Shortell, as well as her wonderful nieces and nephews, and grand nephews.
Friends and relatives will gather on Saturday, December 7th between 4-8 p.m. at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville where a religious service will be held at 6 p.m. A private cremation will follow.
A memorial page has been established in Jacqueline’s memory, and the Sayville Alumni Association will honor her annually on her birthday. We trust that this tribute will bring comfort to those who held Jacqueline dear. We would like to express our appreciation to Martin Keane, Class of 1986, for notifying us of Jacqueline’s passing.
