The Sayville High School family honors the remarkable life of George Charles Strom, Class of 1944, who passed away peacefully at his home on Shelter Island on February 2, 2026, just months after his 99th birthday. Born in Groton, South Dakota, his journey brought him to our shores, and ultimately into our hallways, as a member of the student body known for its resolve during the challenging war years. Graduating in that pivotal year, George left his mark not only as a student but as a young man who would soon stand on the front lines of history.

George’s story is one of quiet courage, dedication, and a life fully lived. Answering the call of duty immediately after receiving his diploma, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 29, 1944. His service carried him into the heart of the Pacific Theater, where he participated in the historic and hard-fought Battle of Iwo Jima—a monumental conflict that would shape the course of the war.

For his exemplary and steadfast service, he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal with two bronze stars—a testament to a young sailor’s bravery and commitment. His promise and intellect were further recognized when the Navy selected him for elite officer training, where he completed intensive programs at both Colby College and Princeton University before his honorable discharge in 1947, having served his nation with honor and distinction.

Upon returning home, he built a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Marie, whom he married in Jamaica, New York, in 1949. They raised four children, first making their home in Farmingville for over three decades before finding their lasting sanctuary on Shelter Island for the past forty years. A quintessential craftsman and entrepreneur, George spent 35 years as a self-employed real estate broker, insurance agent, and carpenter—a true self-made man who could build a house with his own hands and then help a family find their place within it. He remained an active and committed community pillar, lending his spirit to the Shelter Island American Legion, Post 281, and serving his neighbors as a dedicated member of the Shelter Island Fire Department, always ready to answer the call.

George was predeceased by his wife, Marie; his daughter, Laura; and his siblings, Raymond and Frances. He leaves behind a legacy in his children Susan, Raymond “Sonny,” and Judith, and his grandchildren, Suzette and Ernesto.

While the family will hold a private remembrance, a Celebration of Life is planned for the spring, offering friends, fellow veterans, and community members a chance to honor his enduring spirit.

George Strom’s journey from a determined Sayville High School graduate, to a decorated WWII veteran, a devoted family patriarch, and a stalwart community member, embodies the strength, humility, and enduring spirit of the “Greatest Generation”.

George was a living part of our local history and a true American hero. We remember him not just with sadness, but with profound respect and gratitude for a lifetime of service, love, and quiet integrity.

Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his family, his fellow alumni, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. May his memory be a lasting inspiration.
