We were deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Arthur Edward “Smitty” Smith, Class of 1968, as shared by Judi (Hone) McHugh. Smitty, who lived in McClellandtown, PA, was 73 years old when he passed away on June 24, 2024.

The Smith family has a long history at Sayville High. Smitty’s grandfather, Wesley Mills Smith, Sr., was a member of the Sayville High School Class of 1893.

Smitty’s father, Wesley Mills Smith, Jr., was a member of the Sayville High School Class of 1936. Several other relatives, including aunts, uncles, and siblings, are also alumni of Sayville High. Smitty was a talented pitcher in the Little Leagues and an honor student at Sayville High.

Our deepest sympathies are with Smitty’s family, friends, and classmates during this difficult time.

In memory of Smitty, a memorial page has been created, and the Sayville Alumni Association will honor him annually on his birthday, March 27th. We hope that this annual tribute will bring some comfort to those who held him dear.
