Paula McCombs as Ado Annie in Oklahoma! — Help Us Preserve Sayville’s Stage History
Take a good look at this one, friends. Here’s Paula McCombs belting out a song as Ado Annie in Sayville High School’s 1965 production of Oklahoma! The photo is by Rozycki, pulled from a vintage newspaper clipping — the very same clipping also spotlighted Annie Moskwa and Tom Travis.
Our drama page already tells a good chunk of this story. Back in 1965, Sayville High put on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! — Thomas Rice directed, George Seyfert conducted the orchestra, Charles Van Schaick led the chorus, and Mary Beth Potter handled the choreography. The show played the high school auditorium over two nights, and an original ticket from the run was even saved by Mr. James Cashman.
And that’s exactly why I’m writing this. There’s got to be more out there. I want to ask every one of you: dig through your attics and closets. We’re looking for YOUR photos, playbills, and other memorabilia from Sayville stage productions. If you were on the stage crew or in the cast, we’d love your personal recollections. Got old home movies shot on grandpa’s film camera? Old T120 or VHS tapes of performances? We want those too.
Sharing is easy — just reach out through our website’s “Submit Info page” or email halgbrown@sayvillealu,mi.org. Every scrap helps. Together we can preserve Sayville High School’s theater history for future generations.
