The name “Butler boys” likely brings back memories for many – John, Joseph Donald, local legends on the martial arts scene, crowned champions in their time. It is with heavy hearts that we recall John’s passing in 2019, following an incredibly brave and prolonged fight against prostate cancer.

Here at your Sayville Alumni Association, our “Endless Waves” Spotlights aim to celebrate the lives of our classmates, ensuring their stories are remembered.

We are currently crafting a tribute to John G. Butler, Class of 1976, and want to make it as rich and personal as possible. To truly capture the essence of the man behind the champion, we’re hoping to gather more than we currently have – cherished photographs, heartfelt stories, or any mementos that reflect John’s journey, character, and impact.

We’ve tried contacting his brother, Donald Butler, but haven’t been successful so far. We’re reaching out to you in the hope that you might know the Butler family or have a way to connect us with siblings or other relatives. Perhaps you trained with John, knew him socially, or have a story to tell? Any photos or personal recollections you could share would be invaluable in helping us create a tribute worthy of his memory and meaningful to our community.
