Help Us Solve a Mystery: BeaAnne McCarthy, Class of ’80 or ’81
Every so often a name reaches us that has us stumped. So we’re asking our readers: can you help us solve a mystery?
A classmate has told us that BeaAnne McCarthy, of the Sayville High School Class of 1980 or 1981, passed away in 1998, that she had worked at the Lamplighter, and that she is buried at St. Lawrence Martyr Cemetery here in Sayville under the name Beatrice Carr. We have been looking into it ever since, and here is what we have found — and what we haven’t.
What checks out: We have a 1980 yearbook photograph which we have enhanced and colorized very carefully. There is a grave at St. Lawrence Martyr under the name Beatrice A. Carr — born 1962, died April 9, 1998 — which matches the lead on the name, the year, and the cemetery. We also found a mention in the Suffolk County News (July 6, 1995) of a “Bea Anne Carr” as a new co-owner of a local inn, which fits with her being in the hospitality business here.
What’s missing: We searched the Suffolk County News from 1995 through 2001 and found no obituary or death notice for her under either name, and the grave record itself doesn’t mention McCarthy or Sayville High — so nothing yet actually ties Beatrice Carr to BeaAnne McCarthy of the Class of ’81.
So we are asking: Did you know BeaAnne? Was Carr a married name? Did you work with her at the Lamplighter, or sit beside her in the Class of ’80 or “81?
We would like to honor her with a proper remembrance, but only once we are sure. If you can help, please write to us at HalGbrown@sayvillealumni.org. Thank you — let’s get this right for her.
