Golden Flash to the Rescue: Celebrating Gail (Milroy) Byrnes, Class of ’81, for Her Heroic Action on April 9

There are moments that stop us cold. Moments when everything else falls away, and all that’s left is a single choice: act, or turn away.

On April 9, 2026, one of our own proved that once a Golden Flash, always a Golden Flash.

I am overflowing with pride to celebrate our beautiful and selfless classmate, Gail (Milroy) Byrnes, Class of 1981, for her extraordinary caring and leap to action.

That morning, Gail was out running errands when she saw an elderly man suddenly collapse. While others stood frozen or scrambled for their phones, Gail didn’t hesitate. She jumped into emergency aid action without a second thought.

She rushed to his side, checked his responsiveness, and kept him stable until paramedics arrived. But what she did next was just as powerful: she held his hand and spoke to him in a calm, steady voice. “You’re not alone. Help is on the way.”

Thanks to Gail’s quick thinking and courage, the man received the urgent medical care he needed.

Now, here’s what makes this story even more remarkable. If you know Gail—and those of us from the Class of ’81 certainly do—you know she has spent years lifting others up. She serves as a class liaison to the Sayville Alumni Association, tirelessly helping to organize our class events, reconnect old friends, and keep our Golden Flash spirit alive. She’s the one making sure no one is forgotten.

So when a stranger collapsed in front of her, it wasn’t out of character. It was simply Gail being Gail: always the first to step up, always the one who sees someone in need and moves toward them.

Join us in celebrating Gail (Milroy) Byrnes. Drop a comment, share this post, or send her a message to let her know we see her. We are so proud to call you our sister, our liaison, our hero.

Thank you, Gail, for showing us that the heart of a Golden Flash never fades.

“I have never been more proud of my ” sister” Gail Milroy Byrnes. Were eating lunch and an old man collapsed on the boardwalk. People were walking by..staring but not helping. Only one nice man helped. Gail, not knowing anything about this man..ran out to him. He was a homeless old man, dying of cancer. Sooo sad. She stayed with him…holding his hand ( and even got engaged to him) lol while waiting for EMS. She has the biggest heart and made this old man’s day. She’s a hero and one to look up to! WE LOVE YOU GAIL!!@”
