George Daniel Miller, Class of 1964

George Daniel “Danny” Miller was born on November 26, 1945, to Harold and Magdalene Miller.

The family lived on Lowell Road, in Sayville.

He had one sister, Christine, who married Joseph Townsend of Berlin, NJ in 1958 and moved to California.

Danny and his mother Magdalene flew to California on April 7, 1960, to visit his sister, brother-in-law, and new baby niece, Nancy Ann

Danny graduated from Sayville High in 1964 and entered the Navy in August 1965.

We initially presented Danny’s story as a historical mystery/quiz, with the following facts provided;

1. Attended Greene Ave Elementary
2. Attended Sayville Junior High School
3. Graduated from Sayville High School
4. Received the Navy’s Good Conduct Medal
5. Tragically died in the Navy’s biggest disaster in a combat zone since World War II.
6. Is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery in East Farmingdale.

On 29 July 1967, Forrestal (CVA-59) experienced a severe fire while operating on Yankee Station off Vietnam that killed 134 Sailors and aviators, injured 161, and destroyed 21 aircraft.

Among those killed, was Sayville’s George Daniel “Danny” Miller.
