Rehm</strong> as he issues a sharp wake-up call regarding scholarship opportunities for the students of 1961.

        A community should have certain obligations to its citizens. Although the person is part of the community, the community, if it is to be a successful one, should be part of the person. Sayville is failing to meet its obligations in this respect.
    </p>
    <p style="line-height: 2.1; font-size: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 25px;">
        This conclusion was recently arrived at while examining the present scholarship offerings to students of Sayville High School. This community has become entirely apathetic to the needs of those students desiring to expand their education. How can so many citizens sit by and let a few over-burdened groups attempt to supply so many students with the help that is so sorely needed?
    </p>
    <p style="line-height: 2.1; font-size: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 25px;">
        At present the average cost of a student attending a good private college is approximately $2,200 a year. This is an over-all investment of $8,800 in four years, and it is plain to see the cost has risen beyond the means of the average family.
    </p>
    <p style="line-height: 2.1; font-size: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 25px;">
        At the present time there are only five scholarships of any substantial monetary value offered to the students of Sayville High School from the community. Last year's total value of these scholarships was approximately $2,000. The shameful part of the situation is that of the $2,000 the teachers of Sayville School District raised $1,200. Eight hundred dollars from an entire community the size of Sayville is inexcusable! How is it that a handful of over-worked, under-paid teachers can raise such an amount when the community as a whole can only muster a meager $800? This shows a definite lack of concern on the part of the community as a whole.
    </p>
    <p style="line-height: 2.1; font-size: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 25px;">
        A possible solution which seems quite practical is the formation of a central fund to which interested people could donate. Our neighboring community of Center Moriches has such a plan which has proved itself highly successful. All organizations, as well as local businessmen and private individuals, concerned with the problem of college education contribute. (Center Moriches which has one-fifth the population of Sayville has succeeded in providing its students with an amount considerably larger than that of Sayville's.)
    </p>
    <p style="line-height: 2.1; font-size: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 25px;">
        If a local newspaper or organization would see to the development of such a community scholarship fund, it would be to the utmost benefit of everyone in Sayville. As well as aiding needy students, it would serve to give purpose to the community—something that is now lacking.
    </p>
    <p style="line-height: 2.1; font-size: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 25px;">
        Groups, such as the P. T. A., Rotary, and Kiwanis, who are awarding scholarships, deserve a great deal of credit, and their aid is indeed appreciated. But, the need is still there and is becoming greater every day. This is an appeal to all people of the community to help those deserving students in Sayville High School who wish to become better citizens through education.

        The dividends from an investment in youth are infinite.
