Few athletes in Sayville High School history have left as remarkable a mark on the football field as Steven Ferreira, one of the most accomplished quarterbacks ever to wear the Golden Flashes uniform.
Growing up in West Sayville, Ferreira developed into a standout athlete and an exceptional leader on the football field. As quarterback for Sayville High School, he orchestrated one of the most prolific passing careers in Long Island history. By the time he graduated, Ferreira had accumulated 6,407 career passing yards and 73 touchdown passes, placing him among the most productive quarterbacks the region had ever seen.
His senior season in 2011 became the defining chapter of that career. Ferreira passed for 2,443 yards and 29 touchdowns, completing more than 64 percent of his passes while leading the Golden Flashes to a remarkable 12–0 season. That season culminated in a thrilling Long Island Championship, highlighted by a dramatic 78–61 title game, one of the highest-scoring championship contests in Long Island football history.
For his extraordinary performance and leadership, Ferreira received numerous honors. He was named New York State Class A Co-Player of the Year, one of the highest individual recognitions awarded to a high school football player in the state. He also earned the prestigious Boomer Esiason Award, presented annually to the top quarterback in Suffolk County.
Following graduation, Ferreira continued his athletic career at the collegiate level. He first attended Stony Brook University before transferring to SUNY Cortland, where he returned to the gridiron as quarterback for the Cortland Red Dragons.
At Cortland, Ferreira quickly demonstrated the same poise and productivity that defined his high school career. During the 2015 season he delivered several remarkable performances, including a dramatic overtime victory against Utica in which he threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for two additional scores.
One of his most memorable performances came during the NCAA Division III playoffs, when he threw for 447 yards and three touchdowns and added two rushing touchdowns in a dominant playoff victory. The performance ranked among the highest single-game passing totals in Cortland football history.
Today, Ferreira remains part of the proud tradition of Sayville Golden Flashes athletes whose accomplishments extended far beyond the high school field. His remarkable passing records, championship season, and continued success at the collegiate level stand as an enduring reminder of the talent and dedication that have long defined Sayville athletics.
