A Message from 1942, Relevant for Today

A Message from 1942, Relevant for Today

As tensions explode in the Middle East and the US remains deeply entangled in foreign affairs, it is worth revisiting the wisdom of Sayville High school principal Samuel K. Munson, speaking to graduates on the brink of WWII.

In his May 1942 address to the Sayville High School Class of ’42, Mr. Munson warned against the allure of isolation. He urged students to reject the words "security and isolation," stating that "destiny has ordained that world affairs are to be your affairs."

The Parallels are striking.

Just as the Class of 1942 could not ignore the storm gathering across the oceans, today’s generation cannot look away from the volatility in the Middle East. Munson told those graduates to forget the idea that they could, at a certain hour, declare the struggle over and "go back to my own affairs."

Today, as we watch complex conflicts unfold, his words echo a timeless truth: Global stability is not a given, and vigilance cannot be relaxed. Whether it was 1942 or 2026, the lesson remains the same... we are all, eventually, drawn into the affairs of the world. The only choice is how we respond.
