A Memorial Day Glimpse into Sayville’s Past – 1943

A Memorial Day Glimpse into Sayville’s Past – 1943.

As Memorial Day approaches, we take a moment to reflect on its deep roots in our community.

Travel back with us to 1943, when the pages of the Suffolk County News documented the solemn preparations for what was then known as “Decoration Day.”

In the May 28th edition, we see Mrs. Paul Hitigrath playing a role in these traditions—but did you know she was also a Sayville High School alumna? Her connection to our school adds another layer of local history to this poignant moment in time.

And what exactly was Decoration Day? Before it became the Memorial Day we observe today, it was a day dedicated to honoring fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers, flags, and remembrance. The name evolved, but the purpose remains the same: to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

As we prepare to commemorate this Memorial Day, let’s carry forward the legacy of respect and gratitude that community members like Mrs. Hitigrath upheld decades ago.

Do you have any family stories or historical ties to Decoration Day in Sayville? We’d love to hear them!
