This photograph was scanned from a 1921 Sayville high school girls’ softball team group photo and kindly sent to me by Roy Fedelem, director of the Sayville Historical Society. It was edited and colorized.

Interestingly, Eileen went by the nickname of “Bubba”, which appears on her gravestone.

She married Joseph Anthony Masin in 1926.

They had three daughters; Joan Natalie (Masin) Wauhop 1929–1988, Mary Ellen (Masin) Gregory, 1932–2017, and Bridget (Masin) O’Neill 1936–2021.

A few people have asked if Eileen and her husband Joseph Anthony Masin were related to Howard Theodore Masin (Class of 1933), his wife Lorraine E. (Covert) Masin (class of 1937), and their two sons Captain Meryl Howard Masin (class of 1963) and his brother Graham D. Masin (class of 1962).

It is possible they are related as both had roots in the Bohemia area.

Howard’s mother was Agnes (Kautsky) Masin, buried in Bohemia Union Cemetery.

However, I’ve not yet found anything to positively connect the two Masin families.

Joseph Anthony Masin was the son of John and Katherine Masin. Like Howard, he also lived in Bohemia. Joseph had at least one brother named Vincent.

In 1940 US census, Joseph and Eileen were living at 334 Candee Ave. in Sayville. His occupation was listed as “Bricklayer”.

Howard had a brother, Douglas Louis Masin (class of 1938). Neither Howard’s or Douglas’s obituaries mention anything about a brother named Joseph Anthony Masin.

Howard Theodore Masin’s obituary also talks of his Sayville -Bohemia Czech community roots. Perhaps they were cousins?
