100 Years Ago: Girls Win, Boys Lose — Sayville vs. Patchogue at Soccer

From the Suffolk County News, Friday, October 29, 1926

Same Friday, same rival, two very different endings. The girls got the win — and the News used its report to set the record straight against the Patchogue Advance’s version of the game. The boys lost their teammate Louis Gronert to a hurt arm, lost 1–0 on a header, and were sent straight off to play East Islip “today.” They don’t make school weeks much tougher than that — or school spirit much prouder.

From the paper, exactly as it was printed:

Won by Close Score

Patchogue Defeated Sayville Soccer Team Here Last Friday

Patchogue High School’s fighting soccer team repeated its former victory over Sayville last Friday by the score of 1–0. Both victories were made by the same score but this time in Sayville. We are still wondering what accounted for Sayville’s loss of fighting spirit. Our boys finally woke up when it was too late, the last five minutes of play being marked by Sayville’s old winning punch, but Patchogue had the hope of victory too deeply rooted to have that hope snatched away at the last moment.

Our opponents had a fine fighting machine which accounted for their victory which they deserved. Sayville played its best, but it could not give what it did not possess and that was team work.

Patchogue’s tally came in the first quarter. The visitors were awarded a corner kick. While all of Patchogue’s forwards were crowded around Sayville’s goal, the ball came flying shoulder high into the goal area. “Lefty” Nistid, Patchogue’s star center, headed the ball with a clean shot through our goal.

Sayville was sorry to lose the needed services of Louis Gronert who hurt his arm in a collision with a Patchogue player at the end of the first half. The local boys almost had a goal in the first half, but the kick went a little too high. “Buck” MacKenzie made the kick. Most of the playing throughout the game took place in Sayville’s territory.

Sayville will play East Islip today.

Girls Win, Boys Lose in Soccer Games

Contrary to the account of the game in the Patchogue “Advance,” the Sayville girls’ soccer team beat their Patchogue rivals on Friday, October 23, at Sayville. The game was fast and well played and the teams evenly matched. In the first quarter there was no scoring, although the ball was perilously near the goals of both sides. Both of the goal tenders played a fine game. The second and third quarters were played in the same manner as the first. They started the fourth quarter furiously, each determined to make a goal. However it looked as if the game would be a tie until with three minutes to play, Stollie put a penalty kick between the posts. The Patchogue team tried hard to make a goal but they were not equal to the task and when the whistle blew the score was 1–0 in favor of Sayville.
