We have a terrific old photograph and are taking a look at some of the West Sayville Bakelaar’s

Peter J. Bakelaar, class of 1979 has submitted today’s History Mystery for us.

This nice photo depicts Peter’s grandfather Philip (left) and his grandmother Cornelia, 2nd from left.   Philip and Cornelia were the parents of three Sayville High graduates; Anne, Wilhelmina, and Philip.

Grand-father Philip Bakelaar
Philip Bakelaar was born on September 10, 1884, in Texel, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, his father, Philip, was 30 and his mother, Antje, was 25. He married Cornelia Johanna Kwaak on February 19, 1907, in Sayville, New York. They had six children in 17 years. He died on March 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, at the age of 93, and was buried in Sayville, New York.

Grand-mother Cornelia Johanna (Kwaak) Bakelaar
Cornelia was born on July 7, 1889, in Sayville (or West Sayville), New York. At the time of her birth, her father, Dingness, was 22, and her mother, Gertrude, was 16. She died on November 12, 1970, in West Sayville, New York, at the age of 81, and was buried in Sayville, New York.
