John “JK” Kienast, Class of 1965.

We are saddened to share the passing of John “JK” Kienast, who passed away peacefully on the morning of July 26, 2026, while receiving hospice care at Bayfront Hospital. He was 78 years old.

Known affectionately as “JK,” John was a cherished friend and neighbor on Isla and faithfully served as the former treasurer of his homeowners association. His kindness, integrity, and willingness to help others earned him the respect and friendship of many.

Born on August 14, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, John was the second oldest of six children and the family’s only son. He grew up in Sayville, Long Island, graduating from Sayville High School with the Class of 1965. He went on to study mathematics and began his career as a math teacher before transitioning into the computer and technology industry, where he enjoyed many successful years.

In retirement, John fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a published author. Writing under the pen name Sandy Mason, he authored The Johnny Donohue Adventures, a series of crime novels set along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

John moved to St. Pete Beach in 1993, a place that had long held special meaning for him through cherished childhood memories with his cousins. It became the community he proudly called home for more than three decades.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Laura Lake; his daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Lou de Onis; and his three granddaughters, Emily, Katie, and Lily. He is also remembered with love by his sisters, extended family, friends, neighbors, and all whose lives he touched.
