The passing of John Gustave Gerken, Class of 1951

John Gustave Gerken, Class of 1951.

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of John G. Gerken’s passing. Born June 8, 1933, John departed this life peacefully on May 18, 2026, surrounded by his devoted family in Summerville, SC. Regrettably, word of his loss reached us only after his services had taken place. He will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, NY at a later date.

For those who knew John from his years of service with the Suffolk County Police Department (badge 573), his dedication and integrity will not soon be forgotten. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his loving second wife Lynn, his sons Gary, Kevin, and Kenneth, his five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and all of his extended family, along with the many classmates from Sayville High School, fellow officers, and colleagues who shared in his journey.

A beautiful obituary was prepared and published, and can be viewed by clicking HERE:

John was preceded in death by his devoted first wife, Margaret Ann Gerken; his dear sister, Rosmarie Harrison; and his parents, John and Elizabeth Gerken.

A memorial page has been established to honor and celebrate John’s remarkable life—a life defined by service, family, and unwavering commitment to his community. We invite all who knew him to visit, share memories, and leave tributes that reflect the profound impact he had on so many. In recognition of his enduring legacy, the Sayville Alumni Association will observe his birthday, June 8th, each year as a day of remembrance. We hope this ongoing tribute, along with the shared stories and reflections of those whose lives he touched, will bring comfort and solace to his family and friends in the years to come. May the memory of John’s kindness, strength, and sense of duty continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
