While researching alumni veterans for the Sayville High Wall of Honor project, we were working on the Hanak family and happened across a Hanak obituary which was for the passing last December in Benton, Kentucky of Sharon Ann (Hanak) Nelson, Class of 1962, August 20, 1944 – December 20, 2020.

Mrs. Sharon Ann (Hanak) Nelson, age 76 of Calvert City, KY passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020, at her home. She was a police dispatcher for the City of Calvert City, KY from 1974 until her retirement in 2007. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Calvert City, KY.

Surviving are mother, Emma (Flintzer) Hanak of Brookport, IL, sons, John Robert Nelson, Jr. (Allison)of Calvert City, KY, Shawn Nelson (Greta) of Calvert City, KY, and Scott Nelson (Vanessa) of Calvert City, KY, sister, Andrea Douglas of Brookport, IL, brother, Les Hanak, Jr of Woodstock, GA, and grandchildren, Randy Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Rhett Nelson, Shelbi Nelson, Sadie Nelson, Sydney Nelson, Scott Fraser, Emma Kate Nelson, and Chaney Grace Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her father, Les Hanak, Sr., husband of 56 years, John Robert Nelson. Sr., and brother, Theodore “Ted” Hanak.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 in the chapel of the Collier Funeral Home, Benton, KY, with Father Brian Johnson officiating.

Internment will follow at a later date in the Calvert City Cemetery, Calvert City, KY.

Friends may visit with the family between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Collier Funeral Home, 211 West 5th St., Benton, KY 42025.
