In loving memory of Sayville High Teacher
Harriet Josephine (Haviland) Burgie.
Born 27 Nov 1889, Rushville, Yates County, New York.
Died 14 Sep 1972 (aged 82) in Alachua County, Florida.
When Harriet Josephine Haviland was born on November 27, 1889, her father, George, was 41, and her mother, Olive, was 39. She married John Earle Burgie on August 13, 1912, in Yates, New York. They had one child during their marriage, Miriam Elizabeth (Burgie) Grant, SHS Class of 1932. Her husband John Earle Burgie, died as a young father on June 18, 1919, in Hume, New York, at the age of 34, and was buried in Fillmore, New York.
Mrs. Burgie was a beloved career teacher at the Sayville High School.
Retiring in 1960, she was active in the Sayville United Methodist Church, was invited to and attended many SHS student class reunions.
Anthony Yonda, SHS class of 1950 stated: “(I’m) dedicating a donation to Mrs. Harriet Burgie who was my math and home room teacher. She was also my tutor when I was preparing to enter college, 6 years after graduation from SHS. Without Mrs. Burgie, I don’t know how I would have done, with such a long delay between classrooms”.
Memorial donation by her student, Anthony Henry “Tony” Yonda, Jr., class of 1950.
In loving memory of Marjorie Ann (O’Grady) Feeney, class of 1943, who left us on March 29, 2023.
April 26, 1926 – March 29, 2023
Marge grew up on Collins Avenue in Sayville enjoying an idyllic childhood crabbing, clamming, and sailing on the Great South Bay. Prior to her graduation from SHS in 1943, she climbed the “Old 88” tower, binoculars in hand, to watch for WWII enemy aircraft. After graduation from Albany State Teachers College, she married, settled in Bellport, and taught English at East Islip High School.
An early feminist and strong proponent of Human and Equal Rights, she had a strong sense of community and “giving back.” She joined the League of Women Voters in the 1950’s serving as President in the early 1960’s. She also focused on protecting the Bay and its ecology. Her other pleasures included card-playing, ping-pong, and classes for seniors at Stony Brook University. Forever upbeat and positive, she always believed the best was yet to come. She is survived by four children and twelve grand and great-grandchildren.
Memorial donation by her cousin Dr. Virginia Lee Lussier, Class of 1959.
In loving memory of Lt. John G. Calhoun, class of 1981 and United States Navy Veteran, who left us on May 5, 1988.
“I attended school with John from K- 12. He was always one of the most popular, intelligent and friendly classmates.
Our dads were best of friends and I know his Dad was so very proud of John especially when he became a Navy Pilot flying a Grumman airplane (the A-6) that landed on aircraft carriers. I saw John in his dress whites at Christmas just 5 months before he passed in a training accident. The movie Top Gun had been in the theaters and I said – “John, is it just like the movie?”. He grinned and said “Even better!!! I love it!”
It’s such a shame that John did not have the chance to serve his country longer and live a full life. I know that he would have been so accomplished in his Navy career, a great husband and father. The only consolation all these years is that we all know that he died doing what he loved.
Thank you for your service and for paying the ultimate sacrifice, John! Till we meet again”… Janet Hroncich

Wendy was my neighbor when I came to Sayville in 3rd grade. I remember her house and all of her siblings!
