From the Suffolk County News, Friday, October 29, 1926
One hundred years ago, the Sayville High School orchestra tuned up for its second season — short on practice space, but long on enthusiasm, and led by a student, Theodore Such, with Mr. Brutschy as faculty adviser.
Eleven musicians are named below. If one of them is your grandfather, grandmother, or great-aunt, we would love to hear about it.
And notice the ambition in it: a student-led orchestra, playing to establish a permanent music fund for the school — Sayville was investing in its young musicians a century ago, and, through today’s music boosters and packed concert nights, it still is.
From the paper, exactly as it was printed:
The High School Orchestra
The Sayville High School orchestra has begun its second season. Although at present their facilities for practice are somewhat limited, the members are overcoming this difficulty by their genuine enthusiasm to play. They plan to furnish orchestral entertainment at rhetoricals, as they did last year, including in their program an amply varied group of concert and semi-popular selections. They intend early in the new year to give a concert in order to establish a permanent music fund for the school. This year’s orchestra is under the student leadership of Theodore Such. Mr. Brutschy is acting as faculty adviser. The personnel of this year’s orchestra is as follows:
Theodore Such, leader and 1st violin; Charles Huntoon, 1st violin; Andrew Reichel, 2nd violin; Joseph Tmay, 2nd violin; Joseph Brutschy, violin cello; Mr. Warner, bass; William Stochl, 1st cornet; Leslie Otto, 2nd cornet; Evelyn Meystrik, Ruth Levy, Ruth Raynor, piano.
