Sanford Philip “Sandy” Santoli, Class of 1967

Obituary

Sanford “Sandy” Philip Santoli, 74, long time resident of Mobile, Alabama, died in Morehead City, North Carolina, on September 6, 2023.

Sandy was born on November 29, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Sayville High School on Long Island and received a bachelor’s degree from Southern Arkansas University.

Sandy taught and coached in Alabama for 42 years, spending 40 of those years at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile, AL where his teams won 16 state championships (5 in men’s tennis and 11 in men’s golf). He made a significant impact on the lives of countless students in those years. Sandy’s high school football coach had a strong influence in his life and Sandy always said that he became a coach because he realized the potential impact that he could have on the lives of young people and felt it was a way of “paying forward” what his coach had done for him. He also loved mentoring younger coaches.

Sandy loved the Lord and was an active member of Ashland Place United Methodist Church in Mobile. He was active in Bible studies, in serving as an usher and in doing yardwork for the food pantry. He had a servant’s heart and was never happier than when he could do something for someone else.

Family was at the heart of Sandy’s values. His favorite role was as Pop to his much-loved grand-daughters and he loved spending time with family.  Sandy is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years, Susan, his step son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Shanna du Mont and granddaughters, Corinne and Natalie du Mont, all of Morehead City, NC.

In 2023, Susan and Sandy moved to Morehead City to live near family and joined Morehead City First Methodist Church. Sandy resided at Brookdale Memory Care facility where he was cared for by a loving and patient staff and also received wonderful care from Gentiva Hospice.

Sandy was preceded in death by his parents, Dominick and Rosalie Santoli and his sister, Frann Santoli Schwegler.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Morehead City First Methodist Church, 900 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557 or Ashland Place United Methodist Church, 15 Wisteria Ave., Mobile, AL 36607.
