Herb Horn was a very active scout and his advancement through the merit badges and scouting ranks with Troop 16 of Sayville is chronicled in dozens of Suffolk County News articles. Herb’s dedication to the scouts did not end, as he later accepted many scouting leadership roles.
Herb was a true role model for many young scouts. Hal G. Brown, the Sayville Alumni Association director was a scout with Sayville troop 16 back in the 1960’s and he fondly remembers Herb Horn’s exceptionally strong leadership, guidance and mentoring.
In 1942, we find Sayville High Student Herb Horn active in a pre-war rifle club. It is difficult to imagine preparing for world war while still high school sophomore. Herb quickly achieved the milestones of marksmanship first-class, pro-marksmanship and a marksmanship medal.
