A Standing Ovation for Buzzy Gertzen!
First and foremost, a massive thank-you to Buzzy Gertzen for stepping in and working his magic on a less-than-stellar newspaper image. What we had was rough—but what we have now is nothing short of spectacular. Check out the attached photos of Anthony Henry “Tony” Yonda, Sr, Sayville High Class of 1920, to see the transformation for yourself!
Now, let’s clear up a common misconception about Sayville Alumni Association membership:
We don’t do “memberships” with red tape and fees. This is an open, inclusive digital home for anyone connected to the Sayville Schools legacy. We are “free and always will be”.
If you fall into any of the below categories, you are one of us:
*You attended Sayville schools at any point in your life (graduation is not required).
*You serve—or have served—as a staff member, teacher, coach, classroom aide or on the Board of Education.
*You are a student who left before graduation to join the military, support your family, or pursue a different life path.
And honestly? Even if you don’t check any of those boxes, if you have a genuine tie to our schools, we are thrilled to welcome you with open arms.
Take Buzzy Gertzen as the perfect example. By the map, he lived on Brook Street in Sayville Golden Flash territory. Suddenly, and without actually moving an inch, he was a T-Bird (due to redistricting). For years, he has shown up, pitched in, worked in and lifted Sayville and the SAA in countless ways. He proves that community isn’t about zip codes or districts — it’s about showing up and caring.
Thank you, Buzzy—for the images, the support, and the lasting impact you’ve made. We are deeply grateful for your past generosity, your present contributions, and all the good things we know are yet to come. You are a true part of the Sayville Alumni Association Family.
