A Long Road Back, and A Heart Full of Gratitude

Greetings everyone,

I know it’s been quiet around here, and I want to finally break the silence to let you all know what has been going on.

Writing this from home feels like a miracle in itself after spending the last five weeks hospitalized. Many of you knew I was dealing with a medical emergency—specifically, an explosion that resulted in 2nd and 3rd-degree burns over 25% of my body. It has been, without a doubt, the most excruciating experience of my life.

However, I am sitting here today only because of the incredible support of my wife, Charlanne (Sedlack) Brown (Class of 1972), and the phenomenal care I received. I cannot speak highly enough of the amazing team at the Shands Burn Center ICU Hospital in Gainesville, FL, and the dedicated staff at the University of Florida Rehab Hospital. Their expertise, compassion, and guidance carried me through the darkest moments.

The healing process is far from over; I have a long road ahead and am operating with greatly reduced energy and stamina. However, I am determined. I am back home and will attempt to start getting the website back on track. Please bear with me as I rebuild my strength—I may be moving a little slower, but I’m still here.

Finally, a massive, heartfelt thank you to my SAA support system. I would be remiss if I didn’t specifically shout out Ginger Farrell, Ginny Lussier, and Janet Coza for all their efforts during my absence.

To everyone else who sent thoughts, prayers, emails, and cards—I read every single one, and they kept my spirits up when I needed it most. I’m sorry I couldn’t reply at the time; I was unable to type or even hold my phone for most of the hospitalization.

Here’s to taking it one day at a time.
