Fun history mystery; students at the Tyler Avenue School in West Sayville
Today, we have a really fun history mystery!
Courtesy of Kathy La Capra, we have several photographs, some marked 1937, depicting groups of students at the Tyler Avenue School in West Sayville. Our mystery will be to attempt to identify some of these children and the teacher. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!
The ground was broken for the schoolhouse and the cellar dug by the Smith and Graves Company in late 1924. The Tyler Avenue School opened in 1925 at a cost of $21,490. It was considered an attractive addition to West Sayville.
The building was erected in the center of the lot, just north of John Seerveld’s nursery. It was a one-story building with three classrooms and an assembly hall which, if necessary could be divided into two rooms. Behind the school was a large playground.
Many of our alumni remember this building and even attended school there. I remember it and my terrific 3rd-grade teacher, Mrs. Helen Ennis.
Sadly, the building was torn down in recent years. Here is a link to all the photographs;
