When “surfing” meant a journey to Fire Island, 100 years ago: Sayville High School was overcrowded!
On July 1, 1924, our board of education convened to address the crowded conditions.
The promotion lists from June 1924 reveal that 134 students are registered in the Senior High school, while there are only 117 seats available. The Junior high school has 45 seats, with 43 students already enrolled.
Due to overcrowding, the board of education decided to construct a two-unit building at a cost of $2,500, citing that Old 88 has “outgrown and has outlived its usefulness”.
