Gareth Style, a graduate of Sayville High School, made a pivotal choice to enlist in the Army.
At the age of 18, driven by a spirit of adventure and a commitment to serve his nation, as the Vietnam War intensified and the draft approached, Gareth proactively decided to volunteer for combat.
He bid farewell to his hometown and the familiar faces of his 1967 classmates. Before long, he was in a distant land, confronting challenges and undergoing profound changes amidst the jungles of Vietnam, which were nothing like the hallways of Sayville High.
These experiences would shape the course of his life.
Years later, Gareth authored a book, told in first person; “Hill 29 Vietnam 1968”.
Gareth writes;
“It has been almost two years since this book has been published. It has sold over 2,000 copies and over 850,000 pages have been read through Kindle Unlimited memberships. The book has also just been released as an Audio Book, if you have read this book through Kindle Unlimited, it would be a rewarding experience to hear it being read. You also get a special rate to purchase it as an Audio Book.
Vietnam veterans from around the country have contacted me and have had positive things to say about the book. It has been rated #1 quite a few times and has spent a loot of time being rated in the Top 10 on Amazon in the Vietnam War category.
The positive response to the book has been very satisfying and is very much appreciated.
I joined the Army a few days after my 18th birthday, 1967. This book is my story of 3 years of military duty during the Vietnam war. 1 year of training, 1 year as an infantry squad leader in Vietnam and 1 year active duty after Vietnam. This is not a book about endless combat. It’s about a teenage Sgt. trying to do the right thing under impossible conditions. Vietnam wears you down, it burns you out and it’s always with you, even 54 years later. It’s there, just below the surface. That’s what this book is about.
F Troop 8th Cav, Blue Ghost, Hill 29, Vietnam. I am very proud to be a Blue Ghost. And, very proud to be a Sayville High School Alumni”.
