June Vanderborgh Smith; age 93, resident of South Setauket, formerly, of Sayville, LI., died on August 8, 2023. Born into a West Sayville clam and oyster business family, June spent her whole life living near the water in the Sayville.  June’s love of Long Island and her lifelong friends continued over the decades. Considered a pioneer of her time, June boarded a plane for the first time in 1947 and traveled to Carlton College in Minnesota to earn a teaching degree in 1951. It was after graduation that June returned to Long Island to marry her high school sweetheart, Donald L. Smith from Bayport. June followed Donald to the army base Camp Gordon in Augusta, Georgia where she was able to pursue her passion for teaching  in an elementary school. When they returned to Sayville, she continued her teaching career locally as a kindergarten and third grade teacher. Over the 61 years of their marriage, she was active in community affairs. As a member of the Sayville Garden Club she took pride in the beautification of the town, as well as  her own garden. Spiritually, she was a dedicated church organist and a member of the choir for many years. June was a wonderful cook and avid bridge player which she enjoyed with a core of great friends. That same group of friends traveled internationally, where they experienced many different cultures of the world.

June is survived by her children, Derek Smith and his wife Lisa of Alpharetta, GA., Sheryl Hallin of Bozeman, MT., Dana Higgins and her husband James of Morristown, NJ., her grandchildren, Hanley, Tanner, Brooks, Spencer, Taylor, Devan and Logan. June was predeceased by her beloved husband Donald in 2013.
