Remembering Sandra Edwina (West) Nelson, Sayville High Class of 1951.
Her birthday was five days ago on February 2nd. Today, she was added to our virtual cemetery for Class of 1951 and daily birthday remembrances. THANK YOU to Erick Baumeister for his research on Sandra!
Sandra E. Nelson, age 89, of Brooksville, FL passed away peacefully on October 11, 2023 with her family by her side.
She was born on February 2, 1934 in Sayville, NY to the late George and Antionette West. She found the love of her life, Lawrence Nelson, who she wed on January 29, 1956. That union was blessed by a bounty of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Sandra is survived by her daughter, Debra Butler; sons, Daniel Nelson (Donna); Lawrence Nelson; Douglas Nelson (Karen); as well as several grandchildren; Rebecca Furnare (Patrick), Daniel Nelson (Sara), Jason Nelson, Kyle, Patience, Caleb, Noah, and Luke Nelson, Karissa Rulison-Krecic (Taylor), Josh and Joelle Butler, Thomas and David Nelson; great grandchildren; Emily and Grace Furnare, Gunner Nelson, Kayley and Kenzie Nelson, Jack Krecic, Tyler and Jayden Nelson, Katelyn Nelson, Scarlett and Tiffany Nelson, and her dog, Daisy. All of these survivors celebrate her life.
Sandra work as a telephone operator for New York Bell where she met her husband. She lived on a dairy farm and milked all 96 cows. In the 1980's Sandra and Larry had a limousine cattle ranch where they bred, raised and sold cattle. She enjoyed birds, especially watching the pigeons that she and her husband raised and raced since the mid 50's.
Sandra was creative by nature making many crafts for the people she loved. This included beautiful, detailed Christmas stockings and crocheted blankets. These things are still cherished by those who love her. She also had a passion for puzzles and music. Sandra loved playing her piano and would even break out the accordion to play for family on special occasions.
To honor and celebrate Sandra, there was a visitation for family and friends on Sunday October 29, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Turner Funeral Home, 14360 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, FL. Service immediately followed.

Remembering CPL Charles W. Mantha, SHS class of 1930 on today his birthday, February 7.
Charles W. mantha served as a Technical Corporal in Company C of the 17th Engineering Corps of the 2nd Armoured Division known as "Hell on wheels". He participated in the Invasion of French Morocco in November 1942 and in 1943 smashed across Italy. After spending time in England he went into France on D-Day.
On July 25th, 1944 his division broke through the German defenses of St. Lo. On August 19th he was wounded and returned to duty on Septenber 3rd. For this he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Corporal Mantha went into the siege of Aachen, Germany with his famous division and was killed somewhere around this city.(info from the book "Islip Town's WWII Effort")
