A Glimpse into Sayville’s Past: The 1908 Alumni Association Reorganization.
Traveling back over a century to July 16, 1908, the Suffolk County News documented a special occasion—the reorganization of the Sayville Alumni Association. The event was marked by a grand banquet held at the elegant Hotel Kensington in Sayville (photos below), where 29 alumni gathered in the main dining room for an evening of camaraderie and celebration.
A Menu Fit for the Times
The banquet’s menu offers a fascinating peek into early 20th-century tastes. Attendees enjoyed a Clam Cocktail and lobster patties—dishes that would still impress today! It’s a reminder of how culinary trends have evolved (or perhaps circled back) over the decades.
School Colors & Notable Attendees
Did you know that in 1908, Sayville High School’s pennants were reportedly blue and gold, not the purple and gold we know today? Among the distinguished guests were:
Frank P. Nohowl and Robert Lafferrandre (Class of 1902)
Mrs. Nellie F. Mantha (Class of 1904), who served as secretary and treasurer
Leadership & Toasts
The event was presided over by George Harry Hildebrandt (Class of 1906), the association’s president and toastmaster for the evening. The incoming president, Miss Ada Herring, was also introduced, signaling a new chapter for the alumni group.
