Note the thin, delicate layer of skim ice on the bay.

Unlike freshwater, which freezes at 32°F (0°C), saltwater has a lower freezing point depending on its salinity. Skim ice on the bay forms when conditions are particularly cold and calm.

Birds, such as ducks and gulls, are sometimes seen standing on the thin ice.

Thank you so much to Mike Farrell, Class of 1974, for taking and sharing this beautiful photograph!
